“What’s the matter Dillon, The C.I.A got you pushing too many pencils”
This is a review of the 1987 original Predator, but Does it hold up Today? So stick around
This film was directed by John McTiernan who has directed films like Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October and other classics.
The main lead is one of my favourite 80’s film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger who I have to say is probably his best acting in a film period.
It is a simple plot, A group of mercenaries is sent to central America to rescue a few fellow politicians that are held captive. That’s basically it, looks easy on paper, but it won’t be due to unforeseen circumstances.
because there is something out there…. and it ain’t no man!
If you have watched the trailer of this film you would think, this is a guns-blazing, muscle-pumping film, cast full of steroid-using bodybuilders and you would think that the likes of hulk hogan and macho man randy savage would have been cast too.
but you be wrong
As the film goes on you begin to actually believe that this group of mercenaries have a very very strong bond, like they have been doing it for years and they have become a Band of brothers. A group that would watch others’ backs
Especially from the performance of Bill Duke as Mac and his much-loved brother Blain that was played by Jesse Ventura.
One of the scenes, when Bill dukes character Mac is dry shaving in the film, was a small scene but so intense that you really do realise that these guys are a strong family unit.
also when Hawkins keeps trying to make billy laugh nervously with his jokes like his been trying for years to get him to laugh.
Gee, you got a big cat, gee you got a big cat
There is so much depth to this film.
The scenery is fantastically shot, and the story is brilliant and puts together by an awesome movie score, the movie score feels so complete with this movie. It is just awesome
The actual chapters of this film play so well one after another that this really keeps you so watching it that you will want to hold your pee in, well unless of course, you are on your own then you can pause it.
This film still really does really hold you down.
As the film goes on, most of the characters are picked off one by one and the suspense in this film when the team are working out what the hell is going on is just spot on.
One of the great things about this film is you actually see the perspective of the alien creature, you see him look after his trophies, and you see him heel himself. It so works in this film.
In fact, everything works in this film even the final act in which there’s hardly any dialogue, you can just look at Dutches face to read the game.
There are a few negative scenes in this film which I am being very picky about, cause I have seen this film hundreds of times. Like when Dutch has a massive bow and he fires his arrow that looks like it fell down straight in front of him. But I’m just being picky.
So what do I think of the film today in 2023, does it hold up, is it any good?
You bet your ass it does.
This film has been awesome from 1987 until now and I bet it will hold up for another 100 years.
This is a The Beez Fricking Kneez
5 out of 5
Buy it, watch and enjoy it again and again as I goddamn guarantee it your love it.
